What Students Need to Do: Students locate Virginia on a United States map and connect its location to changing weather across the year. They name the four seasons and describe common weather in each one.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name the seasons in order and match each season with likely Virginia weather. They explain that Virginia’s location causes temperatures and conditions to change during the year.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse climate with the weather on one particular day. They may think winter always brings snow, summer is always hot, or every place has the same seasons.
How to Assess It: Give students a map of the United States and four seasonal pictures. Ask them to circle Virginia, order the pictures, and describe its changing weather.

Lesson moves

Make a seasons wheel with Virginia weather pictures, clothing cutouts, and labels for spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Ask students to complete the prompt, “Living in Virginia, I would notice each season because...”
Play Four Corners using season signs while students move to the season that matches each weather clue.
Compare dated local photos from January, April, July, and October, then list visible changes in clothing, plants, and weather.
