What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare two or more readings and form an idea or position about their connection. They reflect on their response, then support it with specific details, examples, or quotations from each text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a focused comparison and describe how the readings shaped or changed their thinking. They choose relevant evidence from each text and explain how it supports their idea or position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize each reading separately instead of comparing them. They may include quotations without explaining how the evidence supports their thinking, or state a personal reaction with no textual support.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Compare how two readings shaped your view of one shared issue. State one idea, cite one detail from each, and explain the connection.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed excerpts from two readings; students sort details into similarity, difference, and evidence piles, then draft one claim.
Ask students to write: How did the second text change or sharpen your view of the first, and which lines caused that shift?
Play Evidence Match: teams pair comparison claims with the strongest quotation cards and explain why each quotation fits.
Compare two reviews of the same film or product, then write which reviewer is more convincing and cite specific wording.
