What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how two or more readings connect, differ, or shape their thinking. They support a clear idea or position with relevant details and examples from each text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong response presents a focused idea about the texts and the writer’s own thinking. It uses precise evidence from each text and explains how the evidence supports the comparison.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often summarize each reading separately instead of making a clear comparison. They may add personal reactions without evidence or insert quotations without explaining how they support the position.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write one paragraph explaining how two assigned texts shaped your view of the same issue. Include one specific detail from each text and explain both connections.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two printed excerpts and colored highlighters to mark shared ideas, differences, and evidence that changes their thinking.
Write for five minutes: Which text influenced your view more, and what specific detail made the difference?
Run an evidence sort where teams match quotation cards to comparison claims, then explain each match aloud.
Compare two product reviews or editorials on school phone rules, then write which source is more convincing and why.
