What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students check who created information, whether claims are supported, and how borrowed material should be credited. They disclose technology use, verify AI output, and avoid presenting generated or copied work as their own.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can trace information to its source, confirm key claims, and cite borrowed words or ideas. They clearly disclose AI help and explain how they checked its output.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think online material is free to copy if no author is listed. They may trust polished AI responses without checking the claims. Some believe changing a few words removes the need for a citation.

How to Assess It

Give students a paragraph containing an uncited quotation and an unchecked AI-generated claim. Ask them to identify both problems and write one correction for each.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed source cards to sort into use, verify, cite, or avoid, then have them justify each choice.

  2. Ask students to write three rules for using AI on an assignment, then discuss which rules protect honesty and accuracy.

  3. Run a source-check relay where teams identify missing citations, weak evidence, altered images, and unsupported AI claims.

  4. Compare a viral post with a reliable news report, then list what a responsible student should verify before sharing either one.
