What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spell words correctly in sentences and longer pieces of writing. They recognize when a spelling looks uncertain and use dictionaries or spell-check tools to verify it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students spell grade-level words correctly in their own writing. When unsure, they use a print or digital reference and confirm that the chosen word fits the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may trust spell-check even when it suggests the wrong word. They often confuse homophones, miss changes when adding suffixes, or choose a correct spelling that does not fit the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph containing eight spelling errors. Allow a dictionary or spell-check, and ask them to correct each error and name the tool used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards with roots and suffixes. Students build words, predict spellings, then verify each word in a print or online dictionary.
Ask students to explain when spell-check can miss an error, using a sentence with their, there, or they're.
Run a dictionary relay where teams correct misspelled words, record guide words or search terms, and earn points only for verified corrections.
Have students proofread a mock job application email, correct spelling errors, and list the reference tool used for each uncertain word.
