What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spell words accurately in formal and everyday writing. They check uncertain words with dictionaries, glossaries, or digital tools instead of guessing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce polished writing with accurate spelling, including academic and subject-specific words. When unsure, they use a dictionary or spell-check tool and confirm that the choice fits the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a correctly spelled homophone that does not fit the sentence, such as principal for principle. They may also accept the first spell-check suggestion without checking meaning or context.
How to Assess It
- Give students a five-sentence exit ticket containing six spelling errors, including one homophone. Ask them to correct each error and name the reference used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs dictionaries and word cards with misspellings, then have them find, record, and explain each correct spelling.
Ask students to explain when spell-check can give a misleading suggestion, using a sentence they create.
Run a team editing relay where students correct misspelled words in short passages and verify each correction with a reference.
Have students proofread a sample job application email for spelling errors, then revise it for a professional audience.
