What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add appositives to rename or explain nouns. They connect main and subordinate clauses to show relationships such as time, cause, condition, or contrast.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students combine ideas without creating fragments or run-ons. They punctuate appositives correctly and place subordinate clauses where the relationship between ideas is clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a subordinate clause as a complete sentence. They may confuse an appositive with an adjective or place commas around every appositive, even when it identifies the noun.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Combine “Ms. Chen coaches debate” and “She teaches English” using an appositive, then add a subordinate clause explaining when she coaches.
