What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add appositives to rename or explain nouns. They connect main and subordinate clauses to show relationships such as time, cause, condition, or contrast.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students combine ideas without creating fragments or run-ons. They punctuate appositives correctly and place subordinate clauses where the relationship between ideas is clear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a subordinate clause as a complete sentence. They may confuse an appositive with an adjective or place commas around every appositive, even when it identifies the noun.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Combine “Ms. Chen coaches debate” and “She teaches English” using an appositive, then add a subordinate clause explaining when she coaches.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with nouns, appositives, main clauses, and subordinate clauses, then have them build and punctuate clear sentences.

  2. Ask students to revise three choppy sentences about a school event, then explain how each added structure changes emphasis or meaning.

  3. Play a sentence-combining relay where teams earn points for correctly using an appositive, a subordinate clause, and accurate punctuation.

  4. Have students edit a short school announcement by adding an appositive and a subordinate clause to clarify names, roles, timing, or reasons.
