What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify which clauses can stand alone and which depend on another clause. They use commas to separate dependent and main clauses, and semicolons to join related complete thoughts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can tell whether each clause is independent or dependent. They place commas and semicolons correctly, then explain how the punctuation shows the relationship between ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may create comma splices by joining two complete thoughts with only a comma. They may place a semicolon before a dependent clause. They also may omit the comma after an introductory dependent clause.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Punctuate and label the clauses in “Although the rain stopped the field remained muddy” and “The rain stopped the field remained muddy.” Then explain why one needs a comma and the other a semicolon.

Ways to Teach It
Build sentences with color-coded independent and dependent clause strips, then place comma or semicolon cards where they belong.
Write two sentences about a school rule, one beginning with a dependent clause and one joining related independent clauses.
Run a punctuation relay where teams repair clause cards, earn a point for each correct mark, and explain one choice.
Edit a short class announcement or email to fix comma splices, missing commas, and incorrect semicolons.
