What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students help create clear rules for speaking, listening, turn-taking, preparation, and disagreement. They apply those rules during group discussions and presentations, then adjust them when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students propose specific guidelines, explain how each one helps, and gain agreement from peers. They follow the guidelines and redirect problems respectfully during discussions and presentations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may suggest vague rules such as “be respectful” without naming observable actions. They may treat guidelines as teacher rules or assume equal participation means identical speaking time.

How to Assess It

Give groups five minutes to write four guidelines for discussing a class text, including one for disagreement. Ask them to explain how one guideline can be observed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams guideline cards to sort into useful, vague, or unhelpful piles, then rewrite two vague cards as observable actions.

  2. Ask students to write: Which rule prevents one person from dominating, and how should the group respond when it happens?

  3. Run a six-minute fishbowl discussion, then award points when observers identify speakers following agreed guidelines with specific evidence.

  4. Compare class guidelines with a sample workplace meeting agenda, then identify which rules would help both groups stay focused.
