What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely during extended group conversations and restate others’ ideas in their own words. They also combine several comments into a brief, accurate account of the discussion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students restate a classmate’s idea accurately in fresh words and identify the speaker. They summarize several contributions concisely, preserving key points without adding personal judgments or minor details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a speaker’s exact words, add their own opinion, or change the original meaning. They may also list isolated comments instead of identifying the discussion’s main ideas and points of agreement or disagreement.
How to Assess It
- After a five-minute partner discussion about a class text, ask each student to write one accurate paraphrase of a partner’s point and a two-sentence summary.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups statement cards, then have each student restate a card’s idea before placing it under accurate, incomplete, or distorted.
Ask, “Which idea changed or sharpened your thinking?” Students name the speaker, paraphrase the idea, and explain its effect.
Play Paraphrase Relay: students discuss a text, then pass each idea around the circle using new wording while preserving its meaning.
Use a short school board meeting clip, then have students summarize the speakers’ main positions and note one point of agreement.
