What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students track what classmates say, then give a brief, accurate account without copying their words. When making a claim, they point to specific lines, facts, or examples and explain the connection.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately restates a classmate’s point before responding. The student identifies the main ideas, leaves out side comments, and connects specific evidence to a clear conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may swap a few words and call it a paraphrase. They may include every comment in a summary or give evidence without explaining how it supports their point.
How to Assess It
- After a four-minute group discussion, use this exit prompt: “Paraphrase one classmate’s claim, then cite one detail that supports your own conclusion.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, evidence, and detail cards; students sort matches, then use one set to make and support a conclusion aloud.
After reading a short article, ask, “Which solution is best?” Students must paraphrase a classmate before adding text evidence.
Play Summary Relay: one student speaks for 30 seconds, the next gives a ten-word summary, and teammates check accuracy against notes.
Use a school lunch proposal; groups discuss one change, cite menu or survey data, and send the principal a three-sentence summary.
