What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify important ideas and research findings in a source. They take notes using accurate quotes, concise summaries, and genuine paraphrases while recording source information and avoiding copied language.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Notes capture central ideas and relevant findings instead of every detail. Direct quotes are exact and marked clearly. Paraphrases use new wording and sentence structure, and all notes identify the source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think changing a few words makes a paraphrase. They may copy exact words without quotation marks, include too many details in summaries, or omit source information.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short source paragraph. Ask for one direct quote, one paraphrase, and one summary, each labeled and linked to the source.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short article, sticky notes, and three colors to mark key concepts, direct quotes, and paraphrased notes.
Ask students to write: When should a writer quote, summarize, or paraphrase a research finding, and why?
Play Quote, Paraphrase, or Plagiarism by showing sample notes. Teams label each one and revise any copied wording.
Have students research a school lunch claim, record source details, and prepare one ethical note for a student council brief.
