What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze how text features, word choice, organization, and sentence structure help readers understand an informational text. They also explain how the author’s purpose and perspective shape the text’s meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain how specific features, words, sentence patterns, and organizational choices make ideas clearer or shape meaning. They use text evidence to connect the author’s purpose with beliefs, assumptions, or biases.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list headings, images, or bold words without explaining how they guide understanding. They may confuse topic with purpose, or call any opinion “bias” without citing language that reveals a perspective.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article with a heading, sidebar, and photograph. Ask them to explain how two author choices aid comprehension and how one phrase reveals purpose or perspective.

Ask students to write: Which three words best reveal the author’s perspective, and what belief or assumption does each suggest?
Play Author’s Choice Match by pairing feature, word choice, and structure cards with their likely effects on purpose and comprehension.
Compare two news reports about the same event, marking differences in headlines, photographs, organization, and loaded words that shape each account.
