What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use information, images, websites, and AI tools without presenting someone else’s work as their own. They give credit, verify claims, follow teacher directions, and avoid sharing private information.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students clearly separate their own ideas from borrowed words, facts, images, and AI-generated content. They cite sources, check claims against reliable evidence, follow class rules for AI use, and protect personal information.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think changing a few words makes copied text their own. They may also assume AI output is always accurate, needs no credit, or can be submitted as original work.

How to Assess It

Give students a paragraph, its source link, and an AI-generated claim. Ask them to paraphrase the paragraph, cite it, and list one way to verify the AI claim.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs source cards with copied, paraphrased, cited, and AI-generated examples, then have them sort each as responsible or irresponsible use.

  2. Ask students to write three rules for using AI on a class assignment, then defend the rule they think matters most.

  3. Play Citation Repair Relay, where teams fix missing quotation marks, weak paraphrases, incomplete citations, and unsupported AI claims.

  4. Compare a viral online claim with a library database article and a trusted organization’s website, then record which evidence is most dependable.
