What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use interjections to show a quick reaction or feeling. They add prepositional phrases to tell where, when, or how. They choose conjunctions that connect related words and ideas clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can combine choppy words, phrases, or clauses into smooth sentences with an appropriate conjunction. The student can add a useful prepositional phrase and punctuate an interjection correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a prepositional phrase as a complete sentence. They may choose the wrong conjunction and create a fragment or unclear relationship. They may use an exclamation point after every interjection, even a mild one.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Combine “Maya packed pencils. Maya packed markers.” Add a prepositional phrase telling where and begin with a mild interjection. Underline the conjunction and circle the phrase.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips, interjection cards, prepositional phrase cards, and conjunction cards to build and read three complete sentences.

  2. Write two versions of a playground sentence, changing only the conjunction, then explain how the relationship between ideas changes.

  3. Play Conjunction Swap: teams fill sentence card blanks with and, but, because, or although, then defend each choice.

  4. Revise a school announcement by adding one interjection, one useful prepositional phrase, and one conjunction without changing the message.
