What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students give an organized oral report or opinion with ideas in a clear sequence. They adjust volume, pronunciation, pace, and tone to fit the audience, purpose, and setting.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students present ideas in a logical order with an opening, supporting details, and a closing. They use clear pronunciation, suitable volume, steady pacing, and speaking choices that fit the audience and setting.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think speaking loudly means shouting or that speaking clearly means speaking very slowly. They may read directly from notes, rush through ideas, or use the same tone for every audience.

How to Assess It

Give students 60 seconds to explain a favorite book to the class. Check for a clear order, audible volume, clear pronunciation, and limited reliance on notes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students record a short presentation, listen with headphones, and mark one place to improve volume, pacing, or pronunciation.

  2. Ask students to explain how their speaking style should change when addressing kindergarteners, classmates, or the principal.

  3. Play Presentation Coach, where partners draw a speaking skill card, present for 30 seconds, and receive one specific tip.

  4. Have students prepare a one-minute morning announcement about a school event, using an organized script and an appropriate speaking voice.
