What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Before reading, students name a specific reason for reading. They connect the title, cover, or opening lines to relevant experiences and facts, then use those connections to guide attention.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar story, students can state a clear reason for reading. They choose a relevant experience or known fact and explain how it shapes their focus or prediction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may share any personal memory, even when it does not help them understand the story. They may also treat an initial idea as proven instead of revising it while reading.
How to Assess It
- Show a story title and opening paragraph, then ask students to write one reading purpose, one useful connection, and what that connection helps them notice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a story cover and sticky notes to record one personal connection, one known fact, and one reason to read.
Display a story title and ask, “What do you already know that could help, and what will you read to find out?”
Play Purpose Match by having teams pair title and picture clues with purpose cards, then explain each match.
Before reading a story about a playground conflict, students connect school rules or past experiences to what they want to learn.
