What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Before reading, students use the title, cover, and a focus question to decide what to listen or look for. They connect the question to a personal experience or something they have learned.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain the reading goal in their own words and name a related experience or fact. After reading, the student identifies a story detail that addresses the focus question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell the whole story instead of listening for the focus question. They may share an unrelated personal story or make a guess without using the title, cover, or question.
How to Assess It
- Show a book cover and ask, “What will you listen for, and what do you already know that could help?” After reading, have students name one detail that answers the question.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a picture-book cover, question cards, and sticky notes; students choose the fitting question and draw one related fact or experience.
Ask, “What are we listening for, and what have you experienced or learned that might help?” Record two answers before the read-aloud.
Play Purpose Match: students match story covers to focus questions, explain each match, and discard unrelated questions.
Read a story about starting school; students connect one real first-day experience to the class question before listening.
