What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Before reading, students identify what they already know from personal experience and previous learning. They use the title, cover, or brief preview to decide why they are reading. They name what they expect to learn, notice, or answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can make a relevant connection, state a clear reading purpose, and explain how the connection supports that purpose. While reading, the student notices details that answer the chosen question or confirm or change an expectation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give any personal memory, even when it does not help them understand the text. They may confuse predicting the plot with setting a purpose, or state a vague goal such as “to read the story.”
How to Assess It
- Show students a story title and short blurb. Ask, “What relevant experience or knowledge can you bring to this text, and what will you read to find out?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs connection cards about a story, then have them sort the cards into personal experience, background knowledge, and unrelated information.
Preview a story cover and ask students to write, “I will read to find out...” and explain what prior knowledge shaped that purpose.
Play Purpose Match: teams pair short story blurbs with purpose cards, then defend the most useful match using one clue.
Have students choose a library book for a classmate, using the classmate’s interests and knowledge to suggest a reason for reading.
