What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students change adjectives to compare two or more people, places, animals, or things. They use forms such as taller and tallest, more careful and most careful, and better and best.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly compare two nouns with a comparative adjective and three or more with a superlative adjective. They use endings or helper words correctly, including irregular forms such as better and best.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use double forms, such as “more taller” or “most fastest.” They may also confuse when to use comparative and superlative forms or write irregular forms like “gooder.”
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “A rabbit is fast, a cheetah is faster, and a falcon is the ____ animal of the three. Explain your answer.”

Ask students to write three sentences comparing two pets, then choose the best pet and explain their choice with a superlative adjective.
Play adjective relay: teams draw noun cards and adjective cards, then say correct comparative and superlative sentences for each pair.
Compare prices, sizes, or weights from grocery ads, using sentences such as cheaper, heavier, most expensive, and lightest.
