The Standard
Proficiently read and comprehend a variety of literary and informational texts that exhibit complexity at the higher range of the grades 2-3 bands (See Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis charts for determining complexity in the Appendix) (Text Complexity, 2-12).
Virginia Standards of Learning for English · The student will build knowledge and comprehension skills from reading and listening to a range of challenging, content-rich texts. This includes fluently reading and gathering evidence from grade-level complex texts and reading widely on topics to gain purposeful knowledge and vocabulary, and using reading strategies when comprehension breaks down.

What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of challenging stories, poems, articles, and other texts. They track ideas across sections, use details as evidence, and apply fix-up strategies when confused.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read an unfamiliar story or article with steady pace and attention. They explain the main ideas, key events, vocabulary, and supporting details, then reread when meaning breaks down.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat smooth reading as proof of understanding. They may guess from one sentence, skip unfamiliar words, or miss how details connect across a text.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short, challenging passage and ask: “What is the passage mainly about, and which two details best support your answer?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed article to cut into sections, sequence, and label with the main idea and supporting details.
Ask students to write: “Where did the text become difficult, and what did you do to understand it?”
Play Evidence Hunt by giving clue cards that send teams back to the text to locate details, meanings, and connections.
Read a weather advisory and have students explain its main message, key details, and actions a family should take.
