What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read stories, poems, folktales, and other literary texts that include some challenging words, ideas, or structures. They explain what happened and support their understanding with details from the text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students independently read an unfamiliar story, poem, or folktale with steady accuracy and understanding. They explain key events, characters, and ideas using relevant details from the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think reading every word correctly means they understood the text. They may retell minor details, miss the main events, or answer from memory without text evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students an unfamiliar grade-level fable. Ask them to write the main problem, its solution, and one sentence from the text supporting each answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs plot-event cards from a folktale to sequence, then have them match each event to a sentence from the text.

  2. After reading a narrative poem, ask, “What changed from beginning to end, and which two lines prove your answer?”

  3. Play Evidence Hunt: students draw a question card, find the answer in a short story, and point to the supporting sentence.

  4. Let students choose a library story, write a two-sentence recommendation, and cite one detail that would help a classmate choose it.
