What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select the strongest evidence from several trustworthy sources and use it to develop a focused topic across an extended piece. They explain facts, details, and quotations at a level their audience can follow.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong writer builds each main point with relevant evidence from more than one credible source. Quotations and details are introduced, cited, and explained, while weak or repetitive material is left out.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect many facts but fail to connect them to a claim or main point. They may rely on one source, choose long quotations instead of precise evidence, or assume readers know key background information.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short source excerpts about school start times and name the audience as the school board. Ask them to choose two pieces of evidence and explain why each one matters.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed source cards, have them sort evidence into strong, weak, or irrelevant piles for a claim, then defend two choices.
Ask students to compare two paragraphs using the same quotation and discuss which explanation better serves a parent audience.
Run an evidence draft where teams select from six source cards and earn points for relevance, source authority, and explanation.
Have students write a two-page recommendation to the principal using local data, an expert source, and student survey results.
