What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build a focused piece of writing that develops one topic across several paragraphs. They select strong evidence from multiple reliable sources and explain it for a specific audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student maintains a clear focus across several paragraphs and uses evidence from more than one reliable source. Facts, details, and quotations are introduced, explained, and chosen with the intended audience in mind.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect many facts without choosing the ones that directly support the focus. They may rely heavily on one source, insert quotations without context, or ignore what the audience already knows.
How to Assess It
- Give students a claim and a three-source packet. Ask them to select three pieces of evidence from at least two sources, then explain how each supports the claim and suits a parent audience.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed evidence cards from four sources to sort into use, omit, and background, then have them defend two choices.
Ask students to compare two quotations and write which better serves a ninth-grade audience, explaining its relevance and needed context.
Run an Evidence Draft where teams draw a claim card, select support from three source stations, and earn points for relevance and authority.
Have students write a school board brief on phone use using district policy, pediatric research, and school attendance data.
