What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify who created a media message, whose viewpoint it presents, and which audience it targets. They compare words, images, selected facts, and persuasive techniques. They explain the message's purpose, likely impact, and effectiveness.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare two media messages and support each claim with specific words, images, facts, or omissions. They can explain how source and viewpoint shape a message. They can judge effectiveness for a named audience and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a polished website as reliable without checking its author, evidence, or funding. They may confuse the intended audience with the people shown. They may also name a persuasive technique without explaining its effect.

How to Assess It

Give students one advertisement and one short editorial about the same issue. Ask them to identify each source, viewpoint, audience, purpose, persuasive choices, and likely effect, using two details as evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed ad and blog post to mark with sticky notes for source, viewpoint, audience, purpose, and persuasive choices.

  2. Write six sentences comparing how two reports frame the same event through headlines, images, quoted sources, and omitted details.

  3. Play Evidence Match: students pair claim cards about audience or intent with supporting details from four short media samples.

  4. Compare a local business advertisement with its website and social media post, then decide which version best reaches its intended audience.
