What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose digital media that fit a clear purpose, audience, and message. They combine words, images, audio, video, links, or data without distracting from the main point. They credit sources, respect copyright and privacy, and make the product accessible.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how each media choice helps the audience understand or respond. The finished product uses reliable sources, clear attribution, readable design, captions or transcripts, and no unnecessary effects.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images, music, or animation only for decoration. They may assume anything online is free to use, or cite a search engine instead of the original source. They may overlook consent, captions, alt text, biased visuals, or audience access.

How to Assess It

Give students a short claim and three possible additions: a graph, a meme, and a podcast clip. Ask them to choose one, explain its purpose, write a source credit, and name one accessibility step.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed paragraph and source folder; they turn it into one slide using one visual, a caption, and a source credit.

  2. Compare two versions of a school announcement, then write which media choices better serve students, families, and screen reader users.

  3. Run a media match game where teams pair audience cards with format cards and defend each choice in twenty seconds.

  4. Create a public service post for a local issue using one verified statistic, one licensed image, attribution, and alt text.
