What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen across a sustained discussion and track where speakers share views or differ. They combine those ideas into a clear, fair summary without taking sides.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can give a brief, neutral recap of where the group aligned and where views differed. The recap accurately connects claims to supporting reasons or evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students often list what each speaker said instead of combining related ideas. They may mistake a different example for disagreement, add personal opinions, or miss partial agreement.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “State one point the group agreed on and one point it disputed. Name the idea or evidence behind each.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups colored note cards to record shared views, disputed claims, and evidence, then arrange the cards into a two-sentence recap.

  2. After a fishbowl discussion on a class text, ask observers to write one neutral sentence for consensus and one for unresolved disagreement.

  3. Play Summary Relay: teams hear a short debate, pass a written recap, and score points for accuracy, balance, and named evidence.

  4. Show a brief school board clip, then have students draft meeting notes that separate agreed actions from contested proposals.
