What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write an ending that grows directly from the claim, reasons, and evidence already presented. They bring the ideas together and explain why the argument matters without adding an unsupported point.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The conclusion clearly connects to the claim and evidence in the body. It synthesizes the argument rather than repeating the introduction. Any final insight or call to action is supported by the argument.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy the thesis word for word or summarize each body paragraph. They may also introduce new evidence, make an unsupported call to action, or end with a broad statement unrelated to the claim.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-paragraph argument without an ending. Ask them to write a three-sentence conclusion that connects the claim, reasons, and significance without adding new evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs claim, evidence, and conclusion strips, then have them build a logical set and explain why the ending fits.
Compare two endings for the same argument and write which one is stronger, citing one specific connection to the body.
Play Conclusion Match by pairing argument cards with ending cards, including distractors that add new claims or unrelated ideas.
Read the final paragraph of a local editorial, then revise it to make its recommendation follow clearly from the evidence.
