What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write a closing section for a sustained informational or explanatory piece. They connect the main ideas, show why the explanation matters, and avoid introducing unrelated evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

The conclusion grows logically from the evidence and ideas developed earlier. It brings key points together, explains their larger meaning, and gives the reader a clear sense of closure.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat the introduction word for word or list points without showing how they connect. Some add new evidence, make an unsupported claim, or end with a vague phrase such as "in conclusion."

How to Assess It

Give students a short informational draft without an ending. Ask them to write a four-sentence conclusion that synthesizes the main ideas and explains their significance without adding new evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips from a sample conclusion and have them arrange the synthesis, significance, and closing sentences in the strongest order.

  2. Ask students to compare two conclusions and write which one offers stronger closure, citing two specific wording choices.

  3. Play Conclusion Repair Relay, with teams revising weak endings that repeat, introduce new evidence, or end too broadly.

  4. Have students examine the final paragraph of a news analysis and identify how it connects findings to a larger public concern.
