What Students Need to Do
- Students write an ending that grows logically from the ideas developed in an explanatory piece. They synthesize key points and show why the information matters.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong writer connects the ending to the explanation’s main ideas without copying earlier sentences. The conclusion leaves readers with a clear sense of what the information means or why it matters.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often repeat the introduction word for word or write only “In conclusion.” Some add new evidence, switch topics, or make claims the body did not support.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short explanatory passage without an ending. Ask them to write a three-sentence conclusion that synthesizes the main points and explains their significance.
