What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work through a simple classroom problem instead of choosing the first idea they hear. They compare possible fixes, try one, and check whether it worked.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name the problem, share two possible solutions, and explain one good or bad result for each. The student chooses a solution, tries it, and says whether the problem was fixed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the option they like best rather than one that solves the problem fairly. They may list only one idea or assume a solution worked without checking the result.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “Two students want the same classroom marker. What could they do?” Have students draw two solutions, choose one, and explain how they would check it.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs one toy and ask them to test two ways to share it, then decide which way works better.
Ask, “What should we do when two classmates want the same seat?” Record ideas and discuss one benefit and one drawback of each.
Play Solution Sort with picture cards, matching playground problems to possible fixes and explaining whether each fix would work.
Plan how the class should distribute limited art supplies, try the plan during a project, then discuss what should change next time.
