- Government. The student understands the American beliefs and principles reflected in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and other important historic documents. The student is expected to:
identify colonial grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence and explain how those grievances were addressed in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights

What Students Need to Do
- Students match specific colonial complaints to protections or government structures created later. They explain how each safeguard limits government power or protects individual rights.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can connect taxation without representation to an elected Congress, jury denial to the Sixth and Seventh Amendments, and troop quartering to the Third Amendment. They support each match with a clear explanation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Declaration created enforceable legal rights. They may also treat the Constitution and Bill of Rights as one document adopted at the same time. Some assume every complaint matches one amendment, though several were addressed through government structure.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: The king denied colonists jury trials. Name the later protection that addressed this complaint and explain how it prevents similar abuse.

Give pairs grievance cards and safeguard cards; students match them, then add a sticky note explaining each link.
Ask students to write: Which colonial complaint received the strongest safeguard, and what constitutional language supports your choice?
