What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify why Spanish officials, Mexican leaders, and Anglo settlers wanted communities in Texas. They compare missions and presidios, empresario land grants, and farms, ranches, or plantations.

- Students can organize each group’s goals and methods in a clear comparison. They support each contrast with an accurate example, such as a mission, empresario contract, or land grant.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all three groups settled Texas for the same reasons. They may treat empresarios as only Anglo, confuse Mexican settlement with the mission system, or overlook slavery in Anglo settlement.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-column exit ticket labeled Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo. They must list one purpose and one method for each, then write one contrast sentence.
