What Students Need to Do: Students give a clear spoken explanation or claim. They use accurate facts from sources and connect them to something they have seen, done, or learned.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student speaks in a logical order, states the main idea, and includes specific evidence. The student explains how each fact or experience supports the point.
Common Misconceptions: Students may read copied notes aloud instead of explaining ideas in their own words. They may give unsupported opinions or treat one personal experience as proof.
How to Assess It: Ask: Which physical feature most affects life in a country you studied? Give a 60-second response with one researched fact and one relevant example.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three source cards about one country, then have them sort evidence, choose a claim, and deliver a 45-second explanation.
Ask students to discuss: Which source fact changed your view of a culture, and what prior experience helped you understand it?
Play Evidence Relay: students draw a claim card, select a matching fact card, and give a 30-second response.
Students act as travel advisers and give a one-minute recommendation using one researched fact and one relevant personal preference.
