What Students Need to Do: Students gather facts from sources and connect them to relevant experiences. They explain their ideas aloud in a clear order, using accurate details rather than unsupported opinions.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can give a brief, organized talk with a clear main idea and accurate supporting facts. The student explains source information in their own words and answers a follow-up question.
Common Misconceptions: Students may read notes word for word or list facts without explaining the main idea. They may treat personal opinions as research or share an experience that does not support the topic.
How to Assess It: Give students a short passage about a historical figure, then ask for a 30-second explanation with one accurate fact and one relevant personal connection.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three source cards about a local landmark, then have them sort facts and deliver a one-minute explanation using the cards.
Have students discuss which researched fact changed their thinking and which personal experience helps explain it.
Play Speaker Swap: students draw a topic card, review two facts, speak for 30 seconds, then receive one peer question.
Students interview a school staff member about a campus change, check one claim in a source, and report both findings aloud.
