- Students explain how the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark’s expedition, and Manifest Destiny shaped westward growth. They connect each to motives, geography, and consequences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place the purchase and expedition route on a map and put key events in order. They explain Manifest Destiny as a belief and describe effects on settlers and Native peoples.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Lewis and Clark made the purchase or that it included the entire West. They may treat Manifest Destiny as a law and overlook Native displacement.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank U.S. map and three labels: Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark route, and westward settlement. Ask them to add each label and explain one connection.
