What Students Need to Do

Students identify James Madison’s and George Mason’s roles in shaping the Constitution. They connect Madison to the Virginia Plan and Bill of Rights, and Mason to rights protections.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can name one contribution from each man and explain its effect on the new government. They can compare their positions using accurate evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Madison wrote the Constitution alone or that Mason signed it. They may also confuse Mason’s Virginia Declaration of Rights with the Declaration of Independence.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one contribution by Madison and one by Mason, then explain how each influenced the Constitution or Bill of Rights.

   Give pairs contribution cards to sort under Madison, Mason, or both, then require one evidence sentence for each choice.

   Ask students to write: How did Madison and Mason agree about rights, and where did their actions differ?

   Play a four-corner clue game where students move to Madison, Mason, both, or neither after hearing each contribution.

   Examine a current school rule, then have students propose a written rights protection as Mason and a government plan as Madison.
