What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the people, events, and groups represented by familiar images and celebrations. They explain where each appears and what message it communicates.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student connects Uncle Sam with the United States, Labor Day with American workers, the donkey with Democrats, and the elephant with Republicans. The student also sorts each example into the correct type and explains the choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Uncle Sam was a president or that Labor Day honors soldiers. They may also confuse the two party animals or treat them as official national animals.
How to Assess It
- Show the four examples on an exit ticket. Ask students to name what each represents and label it patriotic, national celebration, or political.
