What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each celebration to a specific historical event and explain why Texans remember it. They use dates, places, and people to compare the celebrations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that March 2 marks Texas's 1836 declaration of independence, not the final victory. The student can connect Juneteenth to the June 19, 1865 freedom announcement in Galveston and its meaning for Black Texans.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Texas won independence on March 2, rather than declaring it while fighting continued. They may think the Emancipation Proclamation immediately freed every enslaved Texan, or that Juneteenth marks the end of slavery nationwide.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For each celebration, write the event that began it and one reason Texans still observe it.

Give pairs date, place, event, and meaning cards to match for March 2 and June 19, then build a two-event timeline.
Ask, “How can a celebration remember both freedom and unfinished work?” Students cite one fact from a short source on each event.
Play celebration sort: teams place fact cards under Texas Independence Day, Juneteenth, or Both, then correct one another with evidence.
Have students examine a local celebration flyer and identify how its symbols and activities connect to Texas Independence Day or Juneteenth.
