What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how computers, pasteurization, and vaccines changed daily life. They compare life before and after each development and identify effects on different communities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect computers with faster communication and access to information, pasteurization with safer food, and vaccines with less disease. They also recognize that access and benefits can vary by community.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse pasteurization with refrigeration or think vaccines cure people who are already sick. They may assume every community received these technologies at the same time or benefited equally.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-column exit ticket labeled computers, pasteurization, and vaccines. Under each heading, have them write one change it brought to communities.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort picture cards showing community life before and after computers, pasteurization, and vaccines, then explain each match.
Ask students to write which development changed community life most and support their choice with two specific effects.
Play Impact Match by pairing technology cards with effect cards, such as safer milk, fewer disease outbreaks, or faster communication.
Examine a milk label, a vaccination notice, and a school computer, then discuss how each connects families to community services.
