What Students Need to Do: Students observe objects and events, then name light, sound, or thermal energy they notice. They describe matter using visible or touchable properties such as color, shape, texture, size, and material.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly identify an energy form in a familiar example and point to evidence. They describe and sort objects using at least two observable properties.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call the object itself energy, rather than naming the light, sound, or heat it produces. They may describe matter by its use instead of its observable properties.
How to Assess It: Show a ringing metal bell and a soft red cloth. Ask students to name the energy from the bell and give two properties of the cloth.

Lesson moves

Set out flashlights, bells, and warm water bottles for students to observe, then sort by light, sound, or thermal energy.
Ask, "How can you describe this spoon without telling what it is used for?" Record answers using property words.
Play a sorting relay where students place object cards under labels for color, shape, texture, or material.
Take a classroom energy walk and have students point out one source of light, sound, and warmth.
