What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name scientists and engineers and tell what kind of work they do. They explain how a discovery, tool, or invention can help people.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify people such as Mae Jemison, Isaac Newton, and Ynes Mexia from pictures or short descriptions. The student can name their work and explain one way it helped others.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think scientists only work in laboratories or that engineers only fix machines. They may confuse an invention with its inventor. They may also think scientific work helps only scientists.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of Mae Jemison and a picture of a space shuttle. Ask, “What work did she do, and how can that work help others?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs paper, foil, cups, and tape to build a shade shelter for a toy, then explain whom their design helps.
Read a short picture biography of Ynes Mexia, then ask students to draw and label how her plant collecting helped people learn.
Play a matching game using scientist cards, work cards, and impact cards for Newton, Jemison, Mexia, and local engineers.
Take a classroom tool walk, choose one useful invention, and discuss who designed it and how it helps at school.
