What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students investigate a moving system by collecting observations or measurements and drawing forces on the objects. They connect inertia, net force and acceleration, and action-reaction pairs to explain how all three laws shape the same event.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can annotate a roller coaster, seat belt, or rocket diagram with force arrows, net force, and correctly placed interaction pairs. The student predicts motion changes and explains how all three laws apply at the same time.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only one law applies at a time or that equal action-reaction forces cancel each other. They may place both forces of a pair on one object, treat motion as proof of net force, or confuse mass with weight.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A car stops suddenly and a belted passenger slows with it. Draw and label forces on the passenger and car, then explain how all three laws account for the motion.

Ways to Teach It
Build balloon rockets on straws, vary the added mass, time each run, and label inertia, acceleration, and balloon and air force pairs.
Discuss a roller coaster drop, then write how inertia, net force, and car-rider force pairs explain the same moment.
Give teams rocket, seat belt, and skateboard cards; they race to match each with inertia, force-acceleration evidence, and interaction pairs.
