What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan a fair test that changes the amount of force applied to an object. They measure the object's motion, keep other conditions the same, and record repeated trials.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name the changed variable, measured result, and conditions held constant. The student can collect data and use it to explain how changing force affected motion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change force, mass, or ramp height at the same time. They may treat motion as a force, use vague directions such as “push harder,” or rely on one trial.
How to Assess It
- Give students a toy car and rubber band launcher. Ask them to write a testable question, three force levels, two controls, and a data table.

Ways to Teach It
Build a balloon rocket on fishing line, test three balloon circumferences, and time each run while keeping the straw, line, and distance fixed.
Write a claim answering, “How could we test whether a stronger push changes a toy car’s motion?” and list evidence needed.
Sort investigation cards into changed variable, measured result, controls, and repeated trials, then correct one unfair test.
Use a spring scale to pull a loaded cart with two measured forces, then compare the time needed to travel two meters.
