What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a system’s components and decide what belongs inside its boundaries. They trace how matter, energy, or information moves between parts. They use models to predict how changing one part affects the whole.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can create and explain a model with accurate labels and interaction arrows. The student can remove, change, or add a part and predict the effects on other parts and the system’s output.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list parts without showing how they interact. They may assume each part works alone, every part has equal influence, or a change affects only the nearest component.

How to Assess It

Show students a bicycle brake diagram. Ask them to label three parts, draw interaction arrows, and predict what happens if the cable breaks.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a simple series circuit, label each component, then remove one part and record how the system’s output changes.

  2. Write a claim explaining which aquarium component is most connected to the others, using two cause-and-effect links as evidence.

  3. Play System Failure Cards: draw a missing-part card, predict the effect, then earn a point by explaining the interaction.

  4. Map how a school air-conditioning system connects thermostats, vents, filters, and power, then explain one result of a clogged filter.
