What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a claim, support it with measured or observed evidence, and connect the evidence to a scientific idea. They question competing claims respectfully and revise their thinking when stronger evidence appears.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given investigation results, students build a clear claim, select relevant data, and explain why the data support it. They summarize another view accurately, challenge its evidence rather than the speaker, and revise claims when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think confidence, popularity, or personal experience makes a claim stronger. They often list data without explaining its relevance or treat opinions as evidence. Some see respectful disagreement or changing a claim as weakness.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Three identical plant groups averaged 8 cm growth under blue light, 3 cm under green light, and 1 cm in darkness. Write a respectful response to a classmate claiming green light worked best, using evidence and scientific reasoning.
