What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace solar energy as it heats land, water, and air. They explain how evaporation, convection, clouds, and winds create weather and shape climate patterns.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a diagram or weather map, students identify where energy moves and how water and air respond. They predict likely changes in temperature, humidity, wind, or precipitation and support the prediction with a clear cause-and-effect chain.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the Sun heats air directly more than land or water. They may treat weather and climate as the same thing or assume the hydrosphere includes only liquid water.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A warm ocean current reaches a coastal city. Draw and label a three-step chain showing how it could affect humidity, precipitation, and climate.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place equal trays of sand and water under a lamp, record temperatures every two minutes, and compare heating and cooling rates.

  2. Write a claim explaining why coastal and inland cities at the same latitude can have different temperatures and rainfall.

  3. Sort cards showing sunlight, evaporation, rising air, condensation, clouds, and rain into energy-driven weather chains.

  4. Use Gulf of Mexico water temperatures and a Texas weather map to predict where humid air and rain are most likely.
