What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe and measure substances before and after mixing them into a solution. They compare properties such as appearance, state, and mass, then use measurements to show that no matter was lost.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student records the total mass before and after dissolving and explains why the measurements should match. The student can explain that a dissolved substance is still present even when it cannot be seen.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think dissolved material disappears or changes into water. They may also expect volume to stay constant, confuse volume with mass, or overlook spills and evaporation during measurement.
How to Assess It
- Give students before-and-after data for salt dissolved in water. Ask them to identify what changed, what stayed the same, and where the salt went.

Put salt and water in a zip bag, weigh before mixing, dissolve the salt, then reweigh and record appearance, state, and mass.
Write a claim answering, “Did the sugar disappear when it dissolved?” and support it with mass measurements and observations.
Match solution cards showing materials and masses before mixing with the correct after-mixing mass, then explain each match to a partner.
Prepare powdered drink mix, compare the powder and finished drink, and explain why the dissolved powder remains part of the drink.
