What Students Need to Do: Students identify signs that an ecosystem supports varied organisms, including available food, water, shelter, and space. They explain how actions such as habitat restoration, conservation, pollution, and land clearing affect ecosystem health.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use evidence from a picture, model, or short scenario to judge an ecosystem's condition. They explain why a human action helps or harms organisms and their resources.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a healthy ecosystem has no death, competition, or change. They may label every human action as harmful or assume cleanup can quickly reverse all damage. They may also focus on one organism instead of the whole system.
How to Assess It: Use this exit prompt: “A pond has many species, plastic trash, and fewer nesting areas. Name one sign of health, one problem, and one helpful action.”

Lesson moves

Make a watershed in a foil-lined tray, add cocoa powder as pollution, spray rainwater, and observe where runoff travels.
Ask students to write: “Should people be allowed to build near a wetland? Use two ecosystem effects to support your answer.”
Sort human activity cards into helpful, harmful, or depends, then earn a point by explaining each choice with an ecosystem effect.
Survey the schoolyard for food, water, shelter, litter, and damaged plants, then propose one realistic action to improve the habitat.
