What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and carry out simple tests with gravity, friction, and magnets. They record observations, compare results, and describe patterns in how forces affect objects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose materials, change one condition, and make clear observations. They use results to explain when a force acts through contact or from a distance.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think gravity acts only on falling objects, friction always stops motion, or magnets attract every metal. They may change several conditions at once, making results hard to compare.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs a toy car, a ramp, and two surface materials. Ask them to plan and run a fair test, then write one pattern their results show.

Ways to Teach It
Roll toy cars across carpet, tile, foil, and sandpaper, then measure and compare stopping distances.
Write a claim explaining how a magnet can move a paper clip without touching it, using one observation as evidence.
Play Force Pattern Match by pairing picture cards of events with gravity, friction, magnetic force, contact, or distance.
Test which shoe sole grips a tilted board best, then connect the results to safe footwear for wet surfaces.
